Proof you can hand to someone. When a client or an auditor asks whether the archive is intact, Hiberden's answer is a verification report: each copy re-read from its own medium, matched against its SHA-256 fingerprint, and exported as a report that states exactly what was proven, copy by copy. The per-install signature makes that record trustworthy on its own. None of the other three documents a signed archive record.

Hiberden vs Canister.

Canister, from Hedge, is the closest thing to a default in this category. It handles LTO-5 through LTO-10, verifies with xxHash64BE, and on macOS its Library Manager drives tape libraries with mail slots.

The difference is scope. Canister archives to tape and nothing else. Disk and cloud copies are a second Hedge product, OffShoot, with its own purchase and its own record of what went where. A 3-2-1 plan assembled that way is two tools and two catalogs, and nothing in either one knows whether the set is complete. Hiberden writes tape, disk, NAS, and cloud in a single operation and tracks all of it in one catalog, so an archive reads Covered 3 of 3 only once every copy has been read back and matched.

The Windows story also splits. Canister does run on Windows, but its tape library support does not, and its Windows drive matrix is narrower than its Mac one: HP and Tandberg drives are supported on macOS and not on Windows.

Choose Canister if you are on macOS, especially with a tape library, or you run an HP or Tandberg drive.

Choose Hiberden if you are on Windows, Linux or macOS with a single drive and you want tape, disk, and cloud handled as one archive, for less than half the price, once.

Hiberden vs YoYotta.

YoYotta is a serious post-production tool with a decade of Mac heritage. It calculates MD5 and xxHash while copying, reads every file back from the destination to verify, stores checksums as extended attributes, and can drive up to four tape libraries at 500 slots each.

Two things decide this one. First, YoYotta is macOS only. If your ingest and archive machines run Windows, it is not an option, and that is the whole conversation. Second, the money is shaped differently: YoYotta is a subscription, and the licenses expire when the subscription ends. A working single-drive tape seat is the $110 base plus the $80 LTO drive option, so $190 every year, and cloud is not included at all, because S3 requires a YoYotta Server subscription starting at $400 per year on top.

Hiberden is $299 once. Cloud destinations are part of the product, not an add-on tier, and they go to your own S3 bucket in your own account. In the second year of a tape-plus-cloud setup, the comparison is one payment that has already happened against roughly $590 a year, every year.

Choose YoYotta if you are a Mac post house, particularly with multiple tape libraries or conform work.

Choose Hiberden if you are on Windows, Linux or macOS, or you would rather own the license than rent it and keep cloud in the base price.

Hiberden vs Archiware P5.

Archiware P5 is the enterprise system in this comparison: Windows, macOS, Linux, FreeBSD, and NAS platforms from QNAP, Synology, NETGEAR, and TrueNAS; LTO-1 through LTO-10 with tape libraries; a long list of clouds; MAM integrations; and modules for backup and synchronisation beyond archiving. It is a system you specify, budget for, and often buy through an integrator.

What Hiberden offers against it is proportion. P5 is sold by configuration: the platform starts at €700, and the named editions run €1,450 for Desktop LTO, €3,900 for Archive, and €6,200 for Professional. Hiberden is $299, downloads in a few minutes, and does the job most single-drive teams actually have: verified 3-2-1 across tape, disk, NAS, and cloud, from one catalog.

There is one specific difference worth naming. Archiware describes checksum verification of data that has been saved and recovered, and publishes MHL manifests, but does not describe reading each copy back immediately after writing it. In Hiberden that read-back is the gate: the copy does not count until it has been re-read from the medium and matched byte for byte.

Choose Archiware P5 if you need NAS-hosted archiving, tape libraries, MAM integration, or enterprise scale and support.

Choose Hiberden if a full P5 deployment is more system than the job needs and you want the same 3-2-1 discipline for $299, once.

The part nobody else has

An archive your assistant can read.

Hiberden ships an MCP server, so an AI assistant can answer questions about the archive in plain language: which projects are short a tape copy, when a given file was last verified, what is on the cartridge labelled with a number you half remember. Permission is a level you grant in the app, from read-only upward, and every change it makes is written to an audit log you can read. Credentials are never exposed to the assistant.

None of Canister, YoYotta, or Archiware P5 documents an MCP server or AI assistant integration; Hiberden is listed in the official MCP Registry. Hedge and Archiware both publish conventional REST APIs, which is a different thing: an API is something a developer wires up, while MCP is something an assistant discovers and uses on your behalf.

A catalog is only as useful as the questions you can ask it.

What is the best LTO tape archive software for Windows?

For a single LTO drive, it's Hiberden: tape, disk, NAS, and cloud archived from one catalog, every copy verified by reading it back, $299 once. Hiberden's tape-library support is in beta; for a library in production today, Archiware P5 supports libraries on Windows at a considerably higher price, and Canister's library support is macOS only. YoYotta does not run on Windows at all.

Is there a Windows alternative to YoYotta?

Yes. YoYotta is macOS only, so Windows sites need something else. Hiberden, Canister, and Archiware P5 all run on Windows; Hiberden also runs on Linux, and there is a macOS build for Apple Silicon that macOS blocks on first open until you allow it. Of the three, Hiberden is the one that writes tape, disk, NAS, and cloud from a single catalog without a second product or a subscription tier.

Can I evaluate this without owning a tape drive?

With Hiberden, yes. A virtual tape drive is built into the application, so you can write an archive to a cartridge, read it back, verify it, and restore it before spending anything on hardware. It writes the same archive files and the same checksum records that a real drive run produces. The trial is 30 days with every feature enabled, and restore and verify keep working whether or not you ever buy a license.

Does Hiberden run on Linux?

Yes. The full desktop app installs on Linux as a .deb or AppImage, and there is a headless kit for a server: the command-line tool catalogs folders and writes archives, and the AI connector reads the catalog and re-reads a copy off disk, NAS or tape to check it. Does Hiberden work on an air-gapped machine?

Yes, completely. The catalog lives on the machine, verification reads copies back locally, and nothing phones home. Even licensing works without a connection: the archive computer saves an activation request to a USB stick, hiberden.app/activate on any connected computer turns it into a license file, and the archive machine never touches the internet.

Will my data be locked into Hiberden?

No. Tapes are standard LTFS, and disk and cloud copies are ordinary files in your own storage. The catalog lives on your machine. If you stop using Hiberden, the tapes still mount and the files are still files, and you do not need our software to get your data back. Canister and YoYotta also write LTFS. Archiware P5 lets you choose between LTFS and its own native pool format.

Does a tape archive protect against ransomware?

An offline copy does. Tape is one of the destinations Hiberden writes to, in standard LTFS, and once the cartridge is out of the drive there is no network path to it, so malware that reaches your shares, your NAS, and your buckets cannot reach the tape. Hiberden is archive software, not security software: it detects nothing and blocks nothing. What it gives you is a verified copy nothing on the network can touch. More in WORM tape and Object Lock.
